My New Year’s resolution this year is to put myself first!
What does this mean, exactly? I am sure we have all heard this catchphrase before, but does anyone really know what it means? Does it mean I should cut-off people in traffic because my time is more valuable than theirs?
I think what prevents me from the idea of putting myself first is the notion that it’s selfish and uncaring. I am starting to realize that the opposite is true. Because it’s not possible for me to consistently be caring and compassionate to others unless I extend those feelings to myself.
When my own needs have been met, it is automatic for me to want to help the needs of others, and only then can I do this with more energy and much less sense of burden.
THE JOURNEY… FIRST STEP
As I was driving home from the mall the other day, I saw my sign. I mean a real sign, not just a metaphorical one. It was a logo sign for Massage Experts. It was lite-up and calling my name. A massage was long-overdue, and just what I both needed and deserved! Why not?
I went in before I had a chance to talk myself out of it. What followed, was an hour of pure bliss and relaxation. I think I actually transcended into a whole other state of consciousness.
Let me say I came out of there with a totally different appreciation of massage therapy. I have come to realize it is a necessity for my wellbeing and spiritual growth. The benefits radiate outwardly. I found myself smiling without even realizing it. My mood just lightened automatically. Suddenly, I noticed that people were smiling back at me. I felt relaxed and energized all at the same time. I understood the concept of mindfulness, which had perplexed me for far too long! It was time to take care of me!
BENEFITS OF MESSAGE THERAPY
I am a skeptic by nature, so I really wanted to know if there was any scientific research that validated how I was feeling. Therefore, I asked my good friend Google, “what are the benefits of massage therapy?” It turns out there are more benefits to massage then I even knew about;
- Increases relaxation (I definitely got my zen on)
- Decreases stress and anxiety (such a win)
- Relieves pain
- Promotes circulation and relieves muscle tension
- Nourishes the skin (this one was a surprise)
- Promotes joint flexibility and range of motion
- Assists respiration
- Promotes awareness and the mind-body connection
- Helps with psychosocial symptoms
- Provides a pleasant, caring and nurturing touch
I have learned that in order to make changes in my life I must make a decision to do something new. I must practice this new thing consistently until it becomes a habit.
My first step: I am making a commitment to go to Massage Experts once-a-month!
Why not start off your New Year by making the same commitment for yourself? Your body, mind, and soul will thank you!
